Vice President Operations, BronxCare Health System

Hiram Torres is taking on an essential leadership role as Vice President, Operations at the BronxCare Health System. Mr. Torres’ responsibilities for this 859 bed teaching hospital system are wide ranging and encompasses Medical, Nursing, and Ancillary Services at its two main campuses, as well as BronxCare’s Network of Outpatient Practices and Skilled Nursing Home facility. He is also actively involved in managing the key operational areas at all levels of the BronxCare organization.

Mr. Torres takes pride in the performance of his more than 2000 employees in the Building and Grounds area, which includes Engineering, Facilities Management, and Housekeeping; Environmental Safety Area, which includes Infection Control and Security/Transportation; and Support Services, which includes Pathology, Radiology, Respiratory Therapy, Pharmacy, and Social Services, in addition to Materials Management, Telecommunications, and Dietary, among other administrative functions. “Our recent full accreditation by the Joint Commission, the nation’s leading accrediting authority for hospitals is clearly a tribute to their dedicated efforts throughout the year, as well as a confirmation of BronxCare’s success in Caring for the Bronx,” stated Mr. Torres.

As the COVID-19 Pandemic continues, Mr. Torres is addressing the many challenges presented by it. Including mobilizing the necessary staffing and recourses, adapting to an ever changing environment, and working with government officials, as well as BronxCare’s labor unions, vendors, and community organizations.

As an individual, born and raised in the Bronx, Mr. Torres considers BronxCare as a second home for him. “It is a place where I bring my family for outstanding care,” He and his wife, Allison have three children, Jacob Luis, 20, Justin Alexander, 16, and Jayden Ryan, 14. Their middle names were derived from famous baseball players. Luis for Lou Gerig, Alex for Alex Rodriguez, and Ryan for Nolan Ryan. Mr. Torres was also once an aspiring baseball player in the minor league system. Baseball also provided him with a scholarship to Mercy College where he earned a bachelor’s degree in management.

In looking to the future, Mr. Torres is moving forward with an aggressive business development plan which includes reinforcing existing partnerships with physician groups and community based health organizations, including Morris Heights, as well as continually exploring new opportunities for BronxCare.
